Job purpose

The Cashier is responsible for processing customer transactions accurately and efficiently, providing excellent customer service, and maintaining a clean and organized checkout area. This role involves handling cash, credit, and debit transactions, resolving customer inquiries, and supporting the overall operations of the store. The Cashier plays a crucial role in ensuring a positive shopping experience for customers by delivering prompt and courteous service.

Duties and responsibilities

Transaction Processing

  • Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system to process sales transactions, returns, and exchanges accurately.
  • Handle cash, credit, and debit transactions securely, ensuring accuracy and compliance with store policies.
  • Issue receipts, refunds, and change to customers promptly and courteously.

Customer Service

  • Greet customers as they approach the checkout, offering friendly and attentive service.
  • Assist customers with inquiries about products, pricing, promotions, and store policies.
  • Resolve customer complaints and issues, escalating to the Store Manager when necessary.

Checkout Area Maintenance

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked checkout area, including cash registers and counters.
  • Ensure that all promotional materials and signage are properly displayed at the checkout.
  • Restock bags, receipt paper, and other supplies as needed to ensure smooth operations.

Operational Support

  • Assist with opening and closing procedures, including cash handling, drawer reconciliation, and store security.
  • Monitor checkout lines to ensure a smooth flow of customers and reduce wait times.
  • Support other store operations, such as restocking shelves, when not at the checkout.

Sales Support

  • Promote current sales, promotions, and loyalty programs to customers during checkout.
  • Upsell and cross-sell products to enhance the customer shopping experience and increase sales.
  • Stay informed about product knowledge and store promotions to provide accurate information to customers.

Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with other team members to achieve store goals and ensure excellent customer service.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for improving sales and customer satisfaction.
  • Assist in training new cashiers and sharing best practices.

Loss Prevention and Security

  • Monitor checkout activities to prevent theft, fraud, and other security risks.
  • Follow store procedures for handling suspicious activities, including notifying management.
  • Ensure that cash handling and transaction processing comply with store policies and security guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience as a cashier or in a customer service role is preferred.
  • Basic math skills and familiarity with cash handling procedures.

Competency and Skill Requirements

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to handle cash transactions accurately and efficiently.
  • Proficiency in using POS systems and basic computer skills.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Positive attitude and a commitment to teamwork.

Working conditions / Physical requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift and carry materials and equipment as needed (up to 20 lbs).
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on store needs.
